– Digestive System Specialist
Coordinator · Functional Disorders and Digestive Motility Unit, H. U. Puerta de Hierro-Majadahonda Specialist in Neurogastroenterology and IBD · ICAdig
I advocate for a close and humane approach as the core of a good doctor-patient relationship, where trust is bidirectional and the patient can be personally involved in the progression of their illness.
There are patients who arrive at the consultation with a history of months—sometimes years—of tests that “find nothing.” Real symptoms, disrupted lives, and the frustrating feeling of not being heard. Most of Dr. Matallana’s clinical activity is built, precisely, on that frontier where digestion and the nervous system intersect.
After graduating in Medicine from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and training as a specialist via MIR at the Hospital Puerta de Hierro, she completed her training at the Digestive Functional Diseases Unit of the Hospital Vall d’Hebron in Barcelona, a national reference in the field. That stay marked a clear vocation: to dedicate herself to the pathologies that most require time, listening, and technical precision.
Back in Madrid, she launched digestive functional testing at the Hospital Infanta Cristina in 2009 and, since 2011, has developed her career at the Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro-Majadahonda, where she is the Coordinator of the Functional Disorders and Digestive Motility Unit. There, she has implemented techniques such as high-resolution manometry, ambulatory pH-monitoring and impedance, biofeedback, and impedance planimetry (Endoflip), an innovative tool for studying the distensibility of digestive sphincters. Recently, her Unit has been designated as a CSUR center (national reference center) for the endoscopic treatment of Achalasia in adult patients using POEM.
In the private sector, she practiced for ten years at MD Anderson Cancer Center Madrid, and since 2022, she has been part of the ICAdig team and the Hospital La Luz–Quirónsalud, where she introduced digestive functional tests. She is also a professor of the Master’s in Neurogastroenterology and Digestive Motility from AEG and ASENEM, accredited by the University of Barcelona, and an author of the reference treatise in the specialty.
"One of the greatest challenges in functional digestive diseases is understanding the complex behavior of the brain-gut axis. This knowledge is essential for the comprehensive treatment of these disorders."

“I recently visited the clinic for a digestive system check-up with Dr. Matallana. I have never been treated so well or with such professionalism. She explained every single test in detail, using language that anyone could understand. Without a doubt, I recommend that if you have any issues related to the digestive system, you come here and ask for Dr. Matallana. Thank you very much, Doctor, for everything. Best regards.” -Emilio
“The care I received was excellent, both personally and professionally. Dr. Díaz Tasende is magnificent due to his knowledge, experience, approachability, and problem-solving skills. The institute’s team has shown, on every occasion, the empathy, understanding, and attention that you need as a patient. Both the video call system and the exchange of documentation work very well and allow for efficient progress. Thank you very much!!!” -Lluis
“I took my baby for a consultation with Dr. Galicia, a pediatric gastroenterologist, and it was truly an excellent experience. From the very first moment, the doctor showed a human warmth and professionalism that gave us a great deal of confidence. He took the necessary time to listen to us, evaluate our baby with great gentleness, and explain everything in a clear and understandable way. It is clear that he has great experience and vocation, but above all, that he genuinely cares about the well-being of his patients.” -Paola
“ICAdig is a unique and exclusive clinic with exceptional administrative staff and doctors. At the reception, the staff resolves any paperwork issues with exquisite and friendly service. In the consultation, the doctors are highly professional, demonstrate excellent empathy, and inspire great confidence; you leave the appointment with your questions answered and a solution to whatever the problem may be. My experience in consultations with Dr. José Carlos Marín has been second to none.” -Denis
“A 10/10 for Dr. Fresneda: we spent nearly an hour with her in the consultation without ever feeling like she was rushing us—quite the opposite. She didn’t stop asking questions until she fully understood the medical history and the details of my mother’s digestive issues. Now that healthcare in this country is going down the drain, this center seems like an excellent alternative.” -Jorge
“Dr. Diana Fresneda is an exceptional professional: approachable, clear, and deeply empathetic. She explains every step with a clarity that conveys confidence, and she has the delicacy to always do so through listening and respect.” -Lucia
“Every time I have visited ICAdig, I have received fantastic care. In my specific case, the treatment from Dr. Matallana has been excellent. She knows how to listen and engage with the patient, study their issues, and work toward an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan. She even facilitates testing at centers outside of ICAdig whenever possible. I am very grateful for that. Without a doubt, a highly recommended medical center for digestive specialties.” -Nestor
“Every aspect is exceptionally optimal from the start. The receptionists, Carolina and Silvia, provide information in a charming manner. The medical professionals are magnificently qualified, have a kind demeanor, and dedicate all the necessary time to the patient without the slightest rush. Thanks to Dr. Díaz Tasende, after being ill for months and having been treated by two previous specialists, I regained my health. Totally recommended. Thank you for your care!” -Maria
