Liver Diseases

The liver plays a crucial role in metabolism and detoxification of the body. Various conditions can affect its function, including fatty liver disease, hepatitis, and cirrhosis

Liver diseases can have different causes, ranging from excessive alcohol consumption to genetic and metabolic factors

At ICAdig, we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of liver diseases

Our comprehensive approach addresses liver conditions to provide effective solutions. By using advanced technologies for accurate diagnosis, we evaluate symptoms, medical history, and perform specialized tests to achieve a complete understanding of each condition

Liver diseases can result from viral or bacterial infections, but they can also be secondary to a wide range of metabolic or autoimmune disorders.

  • Hepatitis: an inflammation of the liver that can affect different types of liver cells. The most common cause is specific viruses (hepatotropic viruses) that can affect the entire body.
  • Cirrhosis: the accumulation of scar tissue in the liver, which not only replaces healthy tissue but also causes major disruption of its blood flow.
  • Hepatic steatosis: the accumulation of fat inside liver cells, often associated with obesity and diabetes, and one of the most common liver diseases.
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): sometimes, fat builds up in the liver in people who drink little or no alcohol. It is usually associated with overweight, obesity, and insulin resistance.
  • Autoimmune diseases: conditions in which the immune system attacks liver cells or the bile ducts, such as primary sclerosing cholangitis and autoimmune hepatitis.
  • Liver tumors: the liver can also develop both benign tumors and malignant ones, including primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) as well as metastatic tumors.

Types of liver diseases

Liver diseases can result from viral or bacterial infections, but they can also be secondary to a wide range of metabolic or autoimmune disorders.

Hepatitis

The most common cause is specific viruses (hepatotropic viruses) that can affect the entire body. Although less common, bacteria and other microorganisms can also cause hepatitis or liver abscesses.

Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to both chronic damage and acute hepatitis, which can be very severe. Inappropriate activation of the immune response and certain genetic metabolic errors round out the most frequent causes of hepatitis.

Liver tumors

Most liver lesions, usually detected through imaging tests performed for other reasons, are benign and include hemangiomas and focal nodular hyperplasia. However, some lesions, such as adenomas, have malignant potential.

The liver can also be affected by primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) and by metastatic tumors from the abdomen or pelvis. Accurate diagnosis of these lesions is essential to guide the most appropriate treatment in each case.

Cirrhosis

The prolonged presence of inflammatory processes leads to the accumulation of scar tissue in the liver, which not only replaces healthy tissue but also causes significant disruption of its blood flow. Cirrhosis can result in multiple complications, including digestive bleeding due to esophageal or gastrointestinal varices and the deterioration of liver and kidney function, which in some cases may require a liver transplant.

Autoimmune liver diseases

Disorders in which the immune system attacks liver cells or the bile ducts, such as primary sclerosing cholangitis and autoimmune hepatitis. Although these diseases have the potential to cause severe liver damage, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory drugs are now available that, when started in the early stages, allow for effective treatment and the prevention of complications.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)

In many cases, fat accumulates in the liver of people who drink little or no alcohol. In these instances, fatty liver is usually associated with overweight, obesity, and insulin resistance syndromes.

Hepatic steatosis

The accumulation of fat within liver cells, often associated with obesity and diabetes, is one of the most common liver diseases. This fat buildup not only disrupts normal cell function but also triggers local inflammatory changes that can lead to chronic inflammation, cirrhosis, and an increased risk of liver cancer.

Common symptoms

The symptoms of liver diseases can vary, but some are common, such as fatigue, weight loss, jaundice, and abdominal discomfort. Our team uses advanced diagnostic techniques, including blood tests, imaging studies, and liver biopsies, to assess liver health and determine the underlying cause of these symptoms.

What symptoms might we observe?

  • Persistent fatigue: Constant fatigue is a common symptom of liver disease. Changes in liver function can affect energy production, leading to a feeling of exhaustion even after adequate rest.
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes): Jaundice is a hallmark sign of liver problems. It appears as a yellowing of the skin and eyes due to the buildup of bilirubin. This pigmentation may indicate disorders such as hepatitis or cirrhosis.
  • Abdominal pain and discomfort: Abdominal pain, especially in the upper right area, can be a sign of liver issues. Inflammation of the liver or pressure on the liver capsule can cause discomfort and pain.
  • Unexplained weight loss: Unexplained weight loss can be a symptom of advanced liver disease. Changes in metabolism and nutrient absorption may contribute to weight loss in patients with serious liver conditions.
  • Nausea and vomiting: Nausea and vomiting can be associated with liver disease, particularly in more advanced stages. The buildup of toxins in the body due to impaired liver function can lead to these symptoms.

Prevention and Monitoring of Liver Health

Prevention is key to maintaining liver health.

We provide personalized guidance on how to prevent specific liver diseases, such as fatty liver, through strategies tailored to individual needs.

Additionally, we encourage lifestyle changes, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and limiting alcohol consumption, to help you achieve your health goals—from diagnosis through long-term follow-up.

Healthy Diet

A balanced diet low in saturated fats can help reduce the risk of fat buildup in the liver.

Certain liver conditions and their associated diseases may require a specific nutritional strategy.

Avoiding Alcohol Consumption

Excessive alcohol consumption can cause liver inflammation and damage, which may become irreversible if not addressed.

Moderation is key.

Weight Management

Physical activity helps maintain a healthy weight and improves overall liver health.

Regular Medical Check-ups

Some liver diseases require regular evaluations to detect potentially serious complications early.

Allow our specialists to advise you on the most appropriate measures for your individual situation.

It is crucial to be aware of these symptoms and seek medical attention if you experience any of them persistently. At ICAdig, we are committed to educating our patients about the importance of early detection and providing comprehensive evaluations for accurate diagnosis.

Personalized Treatment

The complexity of liver diseases requires an analysis of each patient’s individual factors and their influence on disease progression and prognosis.

We offer diagnostic and treatment plans tailored to each patient, which may include lifestyle modifications, medications, and, in exceptional cases, surgical interventions.

The Benefits of Addressing Digestive Issues Early

Early intervention in digestive issues offers a range of significant benefits for overall health and well-being:

Early Detection of Diseases

Addressing digestive issues early allows for the timely identification of diseases such as digestive cancers, inflammatory bowel diseases, and other disorders, increasing the chances of effective treatment and successful recovery.

Prevention of Complications

Addressing digestive conditions in their early stages can prevent progression to more serious complications, reducing the risk of irreversible organ damage and improving long-term quality of life.

Improvement of Quality of Life

Early intervention in digestive issues helps relieve uncomfortable and painful symptoms, improving the patient’s quality of life and allowing them to maintain a healthier and more active daily routine.

Less Invasive Treatments

Addressing issues early often allows for less invasive treatment options, such as medication therapies or endoscopic procedures, avoiding the need for more extensive surgical interventions.

Comprehensive Health Approach

By addressing digestive issues early, a comprehensive health approach is promoted, taking into account both physical and emotional aspects, and contributing to the patient’s overall well-being.

Our commitment to medical excellence and compassionate care enables us to achieve our goal: ensuring that every patient experiences optimal gastrointestinal health and an improved quality of life.
